The opening event at Caulfield on Saturday produced a fast finishing win for the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained Sebring filly Sebrikka.
Unplaced in a strong juvenile race won by subsequent stakes-winner Souchez on debut at Rosehill last December, Sebrikka has returned a much stronger filly.
An easy winner when resuming from a spell at Ballarat in May, she showed further improvement in this tougher assignment, charging home from back in the field to win the 1200 metre open juvenile event by a neck.
Sent out favourite she gave her supporters some anxious moments, first when refusing to exit the mounting yard and then when settling back buried in the field, but when she saw daylight Sebrikka produced a sizzling turn of foot for Regan Bayliss.
“Pre-race, she’s a bit of a worry, but during a race, not much to worry about – she’s pretty good,” Hayes said.
“She shows as much fight getting to the line as she does going out to the line.
“She is a bit of a trick but if we can get on top of that, I think we’ve got a really good filly.”
A $100,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Lindsay Park Bloodstock from the Eliza Park International draft, Sebrikka is the fourth winner for Sinikka, who comes from the family of Group II winner The Heavyweight and stakes-winners such as Excelorada and So Anyway.
Sebrikka adds to a great run of success being enjoyed by Widden Stud’s flagship sire Sebring with his juveniles.
Sebring has had 14 individual Australian two year-old winners of over $1million in prizemoney this season.
He made it a metro double at Caulfield with four year-old gelding Ulmann also scoring over 1400 metres later in the day.
