Winners For 2014 Sandown Guineas Day

The Zipping Classic meeting will be held at Sandown this Saturday. The Hillside track was rated a Good 3 on Thursday and with fine weather in Melbourne, Sandown is likely to be racing on a Good surface on raceday.

Thurlow can kick-start a winning day for the punters in the opening event at Sandown (Melbourne Race 1, 1000m). The Sebring filly ran a great race last start down the Flemington 1000m on cup day. With a better gate (barrier 6) on Saturday, Craig Williams can settle the filly in a handy spot and unleash her sprint down the long Sandown straight.

Trainer Chris Waller decided to scratch Wine Tales from the Rosehill meeting and opted to start the filly in the Dandenong Stakes (Melbourne Race 3, 1400m). The 3YO has been racing in great form this preparation with a win & a 2nd from 2 starts in Sydney. She was unlucky last start in the Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) coming from a long way back and was blocked for a run twice in the straight. With even luck on Saturday, WIne Tales looks hard to beat.

Prince Of Penzance has been racing in terrific form and is the logical tip for the Group 2 Zipping Classic (Melbourne Race 5, 2400m). The Darren Weir-trained gelding won the Mooney Valley Gold Cup before an eye-catching 2nd in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in which he had to switch off heels in the straight and just failed to grab the winner. Apart from Protectionist & Signoff, Prince Of Penzance is the form stayer this Spring and he can go on with his winning way in the Zipping Classic.

The Group 2 Sandown Guineas (Melbourne Race 7, 1600m) will be fought out between two top 3YO Stratum Star & Lord Aspen. Stratum Star hasn’t missed a place so far this preparation while Lord Aspen remains unbeaten winning 4 from 4. I’ve been impressed by the progressive Lord Aspen as he has been answering all challenges thrown at him with ease. From barrier 6, his regular jockey Matt Nielson will park him one off one back and get a lovely run in transit. I believe Lord Aspen will remain unbeaten by winning the Sandown Guineas on Saturday.
