Australia May Come Calling For Smart 3YO

Well-bred three-year-old Bugle Call could earn himself a trip to co-trainer Michael Moroney’s Melbourne base if he continues to hit the right notes.

The gelding has made an encouraging start to his career and he will have the opportunity to further his record in the New Zealand Bloodstock Finance & Leasing 1600 at New Plymouth on Saturday.

“He’s a big, lanky type of horse, but he can certainly gallop,” Ballymore Stables racing manager Nick Fairweather said.

“We’ve freshened him up a bit as he’s dropping back to a mile. In saying that it will be a heavy track and more like 2000 metres.

“He’s showing a lot of staying ability and it’s one step at a time, but Mike might look at taking him across the Tasman at some stage.”

A son of Tavistock and the Group One-performed Sir Tristram mare Starina, Bugle Call was turned out after one appearance in the spring and he returned to post a first-up win on his home track at Matamata.

He had a tough run when subsequently unplaced at Hastings and his last two starts have resulted in runner-up finishes.

Bugle Call will be accompanied south by Sororia, who steps out in the Coastal Agri Service/De Laval 1800.

The winner of three of her 14 starts, she was tripped up by the going at Te Rapa last time out.

“She’s never showed us anything on sticky tracks,” Fairweather said. “Every now and then she can throw in a shocker, but at her best she is very talented and I think she will get the conditions to suit her on Saturday.”
