Favourite Finche has entered the top 18 qualified horses of the Caulfield Cup at the second declaration stage on Tuesday.
Finche, who was super last week when runner-up in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, comes in at No. 17 in order after the second stage, where 45 horses remain in contention for the $5 million race.
The final field, which will be decided upon next Tuesday (October 15), will boast 18 runners plus four emergencies.
There remain three chances for horses to leap into the Cup field before the race on October 19.
On Saturday, the winners of the Caulfield Stakes and Herbert Power Stakes are free from the ballot, as is the winner of next Wednesday’s Coongy Cup at Caufield, staged just three days before the Cup.
Just a trio of three-year-olds remain in the hunt for the country’s best weight-for-age race, along with 32 older horses, at the close of the Cox Plate third declarations on Tuesday.
Connections of Caulfield Guineas favourite Dalasan paid the $6600 fee along with the Hong Kong owners of Yourdeel as well as Godolphin, who paid up for their filly Flit.
Three-year-old filly Loving Gaby was paid up as a late nomination into the Group 1 Manikato Stakes on to be held on Friday, October 25.
In all, there were 29 nominations for the $1m sprint, including Nature Strip, Santa Ana Lane and Godolphin’s three-year-old colt Bivouac.
