Guineas-Bound Boss Set WFA Challenge

Caulfield Guineas winner Mighty Boss will get the chance to test himself in the New Year’s opening Group 1 weight-for-age events, before looking to do the major Guineas double.

He caused an almighty boilover to win the Guineas in the spring as a 100-1 shot, but trainer Mick Price won’t be stopping now with his blonde-maned colt – setting him a task against the best horses going around this autumn before a third-up tilt at the $1million Australian Guineas at Flemington.

“He’s another one we’re trying to add value to,” Price said on Tuesday.

“He’s a Caulfield Guineas winner – not saying that’s not enough – but need to do more.

“So I reckon I’m going to run him in the C.F. Orr, the Futurity, and then it is seven days into the Australian Guineas for him there.

“I think that’s the best way to go. The Manfred over 1200m will be too short.

“You’ve got to add value to these colts, don’t you?”

Price has won the Australian Guineas twice – in back-to-back years in 2008-09 with Light Fantastic and Heart Of Dreams – and he could yet have a big hand in the 2018 edition.

In Price’s most recent attempt in the race, Tarzino was beaten narrowly into second by Palentino in 2016, when connections unsuccessfully protested the result.

“Ouyang Feng, the new gelded version. He won his first start then went a bit colt-like on us, that’s fine. He trialled good [on Tuesday],” Price said.

“Holy Snow worked good this morning, he ran third in the Bill Stutt [Stakes], and [I] probably caught him on the way down in the Caulfield Guineas, but he’s a good colt.

“I’m going to try and run Grunt in the [Guineas]… he went to Adelaide and bolted in, in a weak race.

“But he had his first start at Flemington, ran third, so he’ll run in it also, so we’ll have a few pot-shots at the Australian Guineas, and see how we go.”
