Licensed Jockey Blake Shinn Suspended One Month Over Thud Ride

Racing NSW Stewards (on Tuesday) continued an inquiry opened into Blake Shinn’s riding of Thud in Race 4, the Schweppes Handicap 1200 metres, at the Australian Turf Club race meeting conducted at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 18 June 2016.

Evidence was taken from Blake Shinn, Co-trainers Peter & Paul Snowden and Racing NSW Betting Steward/Form Analyst, Leigh Dalton.

Licensed jockey Blake Shinn was found guilty of a charge under AR135(b), which states:

AR135. (b) The rider of every horse shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field

The details of the charge being that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures on Thud throughout the said race to ensure that Thud was given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field in that by reason of all or part of the following particulars;

1) That rounding the home turn, he failed to shift his mount to the outside of BONETE (NZ), which would have afforded him the opportunity of establishing a run that had developed between BONETE (NZ) & MAGIC OF DREAMS; thereby providing THUD with the opportunity to improve & travel behind MISS TENPINS, when it was reasonable and permissible for him to do so.

2) That on straightening he remained for a short distance racing behind BONETE (NZ), and soon after he allowed THUD to shift inwards, to race directly inside BONETE (NZ), which resulted in THUD being held up for clear running between FRILL SEEKING and BONETE (NZ), until near the 200M.

3) That for some distance approaching the 100M, he failed to ride with sufficient purpose & vigour in an endeavour to improve his position between MISS TENPINS & BONETE (NZ) where in the opinion of the stewards it was reasonable and permissible for him to do so.

4) That near the 100M, he desisted from attempting a run between MISS TENPINS & BONETE (NZ), whereby he directed THUD in across the heels of MISS TENPINS, resulting in THUD being inconvenienced & losing momentum; when at all relevant stages in the opinion of the stewards it was reasonable & permissible for him to continue to endeavour to improve between MISS TENPINS & BONETE (NZ).

Having regard to relevant factors in respect to penalty, including this was B Shinn’s first charge under this rule in 13 years of race riding, B Shinn’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Friday 15 July 2016, at the conclusion of a suspension incurred at Eagle Farm on Saturday, 25 June 2016 and to expire on Monday, 15 August 2016 on which day he may ride.

Blake Shinn was advised of his rights of appeal.
