Runner-up in the Emirates Melbourne Cup last year, star jockey Joao Moreira will be endeavouring to go one better aboard the Willie Mullins-trained Thomas Hobson after being locked in for the ride.
Mullins and Moreira have occupied second place in the $6.2 million race in the past two years in fact – the legendary Irish trainer producing Max Dynamite for second behind Prince Of Penzance in the 2015 Cup – so they both know what it takes to be in the finish of the gruelling two-mile event.
Moreira was famously pipped aboard Heartbreak City by Kerrin McEvoy and Almandin in 2016 in the famous duel in the final 300m.
Mullins could have as many as three runners in the Cup, with Max Dynamite back again, while Wicklow Brave – 22nd in last year’s Cup – has also returned to town.
Moreira will also ride Wicklow Brave in the Caulfield feature.
“Thomas Hobson and Max Dynamite are over there and the plan is for both to run,” Mullins said, as reported by Racing Post.
“Joao Moreira is booked to ride Thomas Hobson. We haven’t made a booking for Max Dynamite just yet.
“Wicklow Brave runs in the Caulfield Cup a week on Saturday and we’ll see how things go with him before deciding whether he will run [at Flemington].”
