Outsider Boom Time Stuns In Caulfield Cup

Caulfield’s Carnival of upsets was complete on Saturday when Boom Time surged to a surprise BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) win for Lindsay Park and Cory Parish.

Chasing a hot speed set by Sir Isaac Newton, Parish plotted an inside run in the straight to save ground on the 50-1 chance, taking the lead from Single Gaze inside the final 100m before running away to score comfortably by a length.

The victory was Parish’s maiden Group 1 triumph and gave Half of Fame trainer and part-owner David Hayes a third Caulfield Cup – more than a decade after Tawqeet’s rails-hugging 2006 win – as well as the biggest win to date for his flourishing training partnership with son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig.

Aidan O’Brien’s Johannes Vermeer finished well to take third place for Ben Melham ahead of Archie Alexander’s progressive stayer Lord Fandango.
