Price Filly Can Crack The Monash Code

Crack The Code is back in action in Saturday’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes, and Mick Price says the sprinting three-year-old is flying ahead of her return.

The daughter of I Am Invincible is the only filly nominated for the feature, but Price says she’s taken the natural progression needed to put herself in the finish against her older rivals at the Heath.

Crack The Code has had four wins from six starts, including victory in the G3 Kevin Hayes Stakes.

Price says punters should ignore her last-start 10th in the Typhoon Tracy at The Valley in February, blaming himself for keeping her up one run too long.

“She’s a nice three-year-old filly going well, she’s very enthusiastic about herself and she should run well,” he said.

“Not sure if weight-for-age will suit her but I think she’ll still be in the finish, she’s going great.

“She might be a fraction underdone maybe the last bit and it does look a pretty competitive race.

“But she’s had two good trials here at Caulfield, we’ve been very happy with that.

“She worked on the course proper on Tuesday morning over half a mile with Princess Of Queens, who is a good, working mare, and finished in front of her.”

The stablemates will go head to head again in Saturday’s 1110-metre feature, with Michael Walker booked for Crack The Code and Jamie Kah to ride Princess Of Queens.

“I suppose out of those two I’ll be favouring Crack The Code, she’s going really well,” Price said.

“I think she’s improved, as a 90-rated three year-old you’ve got to step up, it’s a nice problem to have with them.”

But the Caulfield trainer isn’t as convinced about the endeavour we’ll see from five-year-old Princess Of Queens.

“I just wonder about her winning strike-rate, she’s got a booking to I Am Invincible, obviously it’s September,” he said.

“She’s sound and happy but she’s done a bit of racing and she is a mare and I don’t know what she’s going to find under pressure.

“Her gallop on Tuesday morning was one of those ‘couldn’t be bothered mare gallops’ so I don’t know if she’s a bit sick of me or what she’ll show.”
