Prince Penalised For Win

The Darren Weir-trained Prince of Penzance has been penalised 2kg in the Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington for his win in the Group 2 racing.com Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) on Saturday.

The penalty lifts the horse to 52.5kg for (Tuesday) week’s $6.2 million feature and to 30thin the Order of Entry following the closure of second acceptances (on Monday).

“Prince of Penzance showed he is a most promising stayer when strong at the end of 2500m winning the Moonee Valley Cup, doing so with 56kg under the set weight and penalty conditions of the Group 2 race,” Racing Victoria (RV) Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter, said.

“The 2kg penalty issued to Prince of Penzance is at the top end historically with only Ideal Centreman (1988) and Triumphal March (1982) having previously received 2kg from the Moonee Valley Cup, however it is similar to penalties have been issued this year to Big Memory (2kg to 52.5kg), Caravan Rolls On (1.5kg to 52.5kg) and Gris Caro (1.5kg to 52kg) after feature wins.”

Prince of Penzance has not been entered for the Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday, a race that carries a ballot exemption in the Melbourne Cup.

If he is balloted from the final field for the Melbourne Cup he is likely to run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington on 8 November where he would be eligible for a $100,000 bonus as a Cup ballot.
