Summary Of Our Trainers’ Tips For 2020 Golden Slipper Day (21st Mar)

From Mark Newnham

Horse: Shadow Hero
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 6, Rosehill Guineas) He’s never been endowed with a lot of gate speed, his first few strides he’s never been able to get forward, but at 2000m, depending on how he jumps, Josh (Parr) will have a few decisions to make early,. There doesn’t look to be a lot of speed so he will have to make a decision in that first furlong where he positions him. They are all hard races to win but I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race. So far everything has gone according to plan and 3rd up to 2000m looks tailor made for him.

From Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Horse: Dawn Passage
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 1, Darby Munro Stakes) The stable has been happy with the colt’s two trials and the improving track will help his chances to make it three 1st up wins from as many attempts. He does race well fresh. Dawn Passage was scratched from the Fireball Quality two weeks earlier with a slight foot issue. It’s not ideal having the month between his trial and 1st up run but the way that Fireball (Quality) was run it might not have suited him anyway. He’s probably better placed here in the 1200 metres 1st up.

Horse: Farnan
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 7, Golden Slipper) Winner of the Silver Slipper and Todman Stakes in the lead-up on soft-rated tracks, Farnan has drawn barrier 14 but will come in two gates in the field of 16 should the final three emergencies not start. The best horses have still been able to win from those types of draws. He’s got tactical speed which is in his favour as well. What is also important is where the rest of the speed is drawn around him. There doesn’t appear to be too much inside of him and he comes in a couple with the emergencies. Those two races that he’s won in dominant fashion – the Silver Slipper and Todman – have traditionally been very strong guides to performance in the Slipper. Taking a line through those performances and what history has shown, I certainly feel we’ve got as good a chance as we’ve had for a very long time going into the Slipper.

From John Sargent

Horse: Get The Idea
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 6, Rosehill Guineas) He’s a nice progressive horse and will probably be better in six months time but they are only three once so he’s having a go. If he goes well he will go on to the Derby. He’s got all the ability in the world, he’s probably just got to strengthen a bit. Saturday will tell us where we are in the mix against Shadow Hero and those good stayers. If he can run close and be right there we’ll press on to the Derby. If not we won’t.. He’s bred to get up over ground so I don’t think a mile and a half would worry him.
