Weir Chasing More Spring Cups

This weekend’s Pakenham and Werribee Cups bring to an end the series of spring country cups in Victoria that have seemingly been at the mercy of the unstoppable Darren Weir stable.

Weir has so far won eight country cups this spring and is likely to supply the favourites for both the $300,000 Pakenham Cup on Saturday – Kiwia – as well as the $125,000 Werribee Cup on Sunday – Andrea Mantegna.

In all, he has four nominations in both races. At Pakenham, Weir has also entered Master Zephyr, Ormito and Kellstorm while Master Zephyr, Another Coldie and Tradesman join Andrea Mantegna as nominations at Werribee.

Racing Victoria on Tuesday received 20 nominations for the Werribee Cup, which is now run over 2000 metres.

With just four months of the racing season behind us, Weir is well on track to deliver yet another record-breaking season for winners.

As of Tuesday, he has already prepared 209 winners with 33 per cent of the season gone. That puts him on course for a possible 600 wins this season after smashing records in the past two seasons with totals of 449 (2016/17) and 491 (2017/18).
