Northern Meteor Dies From Colic

Boom young sire Northern Meteor died suddenly last night after suffering a fatal attack of colic.

Set to be crowned Australia’s Champion First Season Sire, Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago x Explosive, by Fappiano) was bred and raced by Gooree Stud then retired to Widden Stud in 2009.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Northern Meteor was a Group 1 winning sprinter being victorious in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). And he has obviously passed his explosive sprinting ability to his progeny with stakes winners include The Voice, Swing Vote, Mount Zero among his first season runners.

“Northern Meteor suffered a severe bout of colic requiring surgery18 months ago, but has been in perfect health since then, so this has come completely out of left field,” Widden Stud supremo Antony Thompson said,

“He was a strong and noble horse that made a lasting impression on all who knew him and to say we are shattered here would be an understatement. It’s devastating for Mr Cojuangco, the team at Gooree and everyone at Widden,”
