Gerald Ryan said he can’t repeat his initial thoughts when Snitzerland drew the outside barrier for Saturday’s T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.
Ryan is mindful that history paints an imposing picture for horses that draw deep in the T.J. Smith.
In the 17 renewals of the sprinting highlight of the Sydney autumn carnival, only two horses – Phoenix Park (2002) and Spinning Hill (2003) – have won the T.J. Smith from outside gate 10.
Both Phoenix Park and Spinning Hill drew 11, but it should be noted that not all renewals have attracted a capacity field as this year’s race.
While Ryan’s heart sank, Brenton Avdulla doesn’t see the draw as ending Snitzerland’s prospects in the $2.5 million Group 1.
Avdulla noted that Snitzerland has blistering early tactical speed, but the key to her chances in the T.J. Smith will be getting as close to the lead as conservatively as he can.
“I’m sure she won’t have too much issue getting there, but as long as we can get there as conservatively as we can,” Avdulla said.
“I’m sure she will still run very well.”
Snitzerland has drifted to $21 since the barrier draw with Lankan Rupee being the $3.80 favourite.
