Coolth Locks In Adelaide Cup Assignment

The McEvoy stable had earmarked the Adelaide Cup for promising stayer Coolth at the start of his current preparation and Saturday’s victory in the 2000m BM78 at Flemington has now locked that squarely into his agenda.

“He was quite disappointing last start, I thought, even though he only got beaten three lengths, I expected more from him that day,” co-trainer, Calvin McEvoy told RSN927 on Sunday morning.

“He really dug in for the fight yesterday which was great to see.”

Whilst Coolth remains an immature racehorse, it’s that greenness in the run, and subsequent post-race feedback from jockey Jye McNeil, which gives McEvoy the optimism to progress to much better races.

“His (McNeil’s) feedback was that he’s still got a lot to learn, but in a really positive way, he’s a bit like a kid still, so I take some confidence out of that.

“We know he’s a genuine stayer and we sort of earmarked the Adelaide Cup and worked our way back from that, hence the month between runs, but up to 2000m with the blinkers on, it was really good to see him bounce back like that.”

A naturally fit horse according to McEvoy, Coolth will now head to the Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 12 before, hopefully making his way back to South Australia, where his racing career began, for a tilt at the Adelaide Cup on March 8.
