Mount Athos WILL return to Australia later this year to run in the Melbourne Cup.
Trainer Luca Cumani has ended any doubts about Mount Athos returning to Australia for the Cup by declaring the horse will run at Goodwood this coming weekend in preparation for Australia.
And he says Mount Athos is the horse who could finally win him Australia’s famous race.
Speaking to racingpost.com this morning Cumani said:
“He had a fantastic season when he moved to us in 2012, winning three on the bounce, including the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, and then finishing an unlucky-in-running fifth in the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
“After several close runs in that race (seconds with Bauer and Purple Moon) I still believe Mount Athos may be the horse to finally get me in the winner’s enclosure at Flemington,” Cumani predicted.
“I’m considering running him next in the March Stakes at Goodwood this weekend, but basically it’s all systems go for another bid for the Cup.”
