No matter what Shamardal gelding Delectation does as a two-year-old, he will be a better three-year-old.
That is the firm thought of premier trainer Chris Waller, who said Delectation was a talented youngster who would improve next season.
“If he makes the Golden Slipper it will be a bonus.
“He’ll be a better horse as a three-year-old,” was his matter-of-fact comment when quizzed on his chances of making the world’s richest two-year-old race – the Golden Slipper Stakes.
In just two runs, Delectation has twice run second, firstly to Unencumbered, the Magic Millions Classic winner, then Unequivocal at Rosehill Gardens a fortnight ago.
On Saturday Delectation is marked the $4.60 third favourite in the Listed $125,000 Canonbury Stakes (1100m), behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fighting Son ($2) and Ghibellines ($3.40).
“It was either run this week or wait another week and run over an unsuitable distance, so he’s running this week,” Waller said.
