Driefontein Claims Deserved Group 1

Quality mare Driefontein secured a well-deserved Group 1 when she lead throughout to win Saturday’s Sportingbet Classic at Morphettville.

And, in claiming the Sportingbet Classic, Driefontein, winner of the 2012 Magic Millions Classic (1200m) and 2014 Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap, took her career earnings to $2.1 million.

Vlad Duric took Driefontein straight to front, maintained a strong tempo and kicked strongly in the straight.

Although she was tiring, Driefontein was able to hold off the charging Platelet, looking for back-to-back wins in the Sangster.

It gave Duric his first Australian Group 1 since he won the Caulfield Cup on Master O’Reilly in 2007.

He won the Raffles Cup and Guineas, both Group 1 events, during his time in Singapore in 2011.
