The racing career of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente is over with his future now as a stallion.
An owner of the Gai Waterhouse trained galloper confirmed that Fiorente suffered a tendon injury, believed to be during the running of The BMW at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday.
Fiorente was taken to Randwick Equine Centre for scans on Sunday which (Monday) have revealed he would require significant rehabilitation.
A decision will be made in the coming weeks on where he will stand at stud.
Bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au have decided to refund all bets placed on Fiorente in futures markets including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Sydney Cup and Melbourne Cup.
“The stallion was the equal $21 favourite for the Melbourne Cup and the best backed runner to date. It was also a $6.50 chance in the Sydney Cup, and $11 for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson.
“It’s terrible news and we think it’s only fair that punters don’t have to suffer for it as well. They put their bets on in good faith so we are more than happy to refund on this one.”
