Gai Says Ecuador A Cox Plate Horse

Following a comprehensive all-the-way win at Rosehill on Saturday, trainer Gai Waterhouse said Ecuador was potentially a Cox Plate horse.

“Of course he’ll be in the Doncaster here in Sydney, but I can see him being a Cox Plate horse in the Spring,” Waterhouse said after the TAB Rewards Handicap.

Well-rated in front by jockey Tommy Berry, Ecuador was never really in doubt of winning after the well-backed second favourite, Weary, went back at the start and settled near the rear.

The former UK galloper ran on well and eventually ran third, but the winner was dominant.

Starting a heavily backed $1.70 favourite, Ecuador held off Kaypers ($26) with Weary ($4.40) in third.
