Placing horses in the right races is paramount to their winning chances.
In the case of the Kurt Goldman trained mare Onemoregypsy a big drop in class and getting onto a firmer surface at Goulburn on Friday gives her an undeniable chance to break back into the winners’ list.
Onemoregypsy tackles the Park Street TAB Sydney Benchmark 55 Hcp over 1400m with leading Sydney jockey Tye Angland in the saddle.
The four-year-old mare comes into the event fourth up into her preparation and Goldman has also taken the blinkers off the mare to “change things around.
“She can get complacent when things stay the same,” he added. “I’m just trying to spark her up again to get some confidence back, alter a few things to hopefully make a difference.”
Goldman is the first to admit Onemoregypsy’s last start run in a TAB Highway handicap at Randwick on April 16 when beaten just under seven lengths was “disappointing.”
But the astute Goulburn trainer put the run down to a wet surface, conditions that are not in the mare’s favour.
“Most of her worst efforts have come on soft tracks,” he suggested. “The main thing with her is to try and find a dry track. She should get that on Goulburn Friday.
“She just appreciates a firmer racing surface. Getting back to a firm surface on her home track, I’m looking for a much improved run. She’s done well in between runs. Nothing much has changed with her.”
Goldman admits Onemoregypsy is not the most honest customer in his stables.
“When she’s won she’s won races convincingly but she’s not the most honest horse. She can put in some bad ones,” he said. “She’s a bit hard to catch at times but I’m happy with her in Friday’s race.
“She’s a mare that is not overly big but she carries plenty of condition. The weight (60kg) is a slight concern but she’s not an apprentice’s horse. She’s had a lend of a few of them.
I’m happy to have her back in this grade carrying the weight. She’s got a good barrier (three), on her home track, on a firm surface with a good jockey.
“She ticks plenty of boxes.”
