The 2011 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner at Flemington, Ironstein, will continue his path to the $200,000 Newcastle Cup at Rosehill tomorrow.
Trainer Gerald Ryan this week said he was aiming the now eight-year-old at the Newcastle Cup (September 19) this Spring.
“That’s the right race for him this year and he’s come up terrific,” Ryan said.
“He’s got a big weight on Saturday, so Lester Grace will ride (claiming 3kgs),” he added.
Ironstein was left flat-footed at the end of the 1500-metre Listed Winter Challenge at Rosehill Gardens when first-up a fortnight ago, yet he was only beaten 3.2 lengths.
“He’s going well this horse and the step up in distance (to 1800m) will help him.
“He’s being aimed towards the Newcastle Cup,” Ryan added.
