Gai Waterhouse declared that TAB Rewards Handicap winner Laidback Larry as a “Caulfield Cup horse”.
Waterhouse predicted there was considerable upside from Laidback Larry, which landed a plunge in posting his fourth successive win in effortless fashion.
Laidback Larry, backed from as much as $2.50 into $1.65 favourite, was untroubled to win by a widening four and a half lengths from Hunter Jack, $9.50, with a head to Longshoreman, $7, third.
Waterhouse said Laidback Larry would head next week to Melbourne where he would contest the $350,000 Mornington Cup (2400m) on February 12.
As well as being the richest country cup in the country cup, the Mornington Cup also carries an automatic entry into the Caulfield Cup for the winner.
