Munce Aims To Keep Winning Momentum Going

Trainer Chris Munce is hoping to continue his winning momentum when Wicked Intent chases successive victories at Doomben on Saturday.

Munce has only been training for just over a year since quitting his illustrious career in the saddle and is already starting to make an impact in the training ranks.

Munce has saddled three winners from his past five runners including Wicked Intent who lines up in the Open Handicap (1110m).

His other winners came from his promising two-year-old Nicconi Leggera at Doomben on March 26 and Boris Badenov who saluted at Wednesday’s Ipswich meeting.

Wicked Intent made a brilliant comeback when he led all the way to win against older horses and in open company for the first time at Doomben on March 19.

The win confirmed Munce’s opinion that Wicked Intent was back to his best and on track for a Brisbane winter carnival campaign.

“It was a great effort to win first-up considering he only had one short jump-out and was well under done,” Munce said.

“He toughed out the race well and it’s done his confidence a world of good.”

Munce, who also saddles up Perplexity and Lucky Black at Doomben, has made a spectacular start to his training career and is now in equal 10th place with 11 wins in the Brisbane trainers’ premiership.

“I didn’t set myself a goal other than to train as many winners as I can when I first started off just over a year ago,” Munce said.

“I pride myself on taking fit horses to the races.

“I’m pretty proud of my effort so far to be in the top 10 trainers.”

Munce, who has 35 horses in work at Eagle Farm and Caloundra, has acquired a further 15 yearlings from recent sales and is looking forward to the future.

“I think Wicked Intent is back to his best as a two-year-old and he’s not one dimensional,” he said.

“He doesn’t have to lead in his races and one of his best runs as a two-year-old was when he sat off the speed.

“This is another tough race for him and the perfect race to get him ready for the Mick Dittman Plate.”

Munce has pencilled in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on April 23 as the three-year-old’s early winter target.
