Myer Classic Aim For Oaks Winner

The Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on the first day of Flemington’s Melbourne Cup carnival is the spring aim of the Phillip Stokes-trained Maybe Discreet.

Maybe Discreet won the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last October. Among those she beat was subsequent Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel.

Maybe Discreet also won the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville in April.

The daughter of Shamardal will trial at Morphettville on Monday before Stokes decides on what race she will contest first up from a spell.

“I’ll just see how she trials. If she is coming to hand quickly, she could run in the Let’s Elope Stakes,” Stokes said.

The $220,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) will be held at Flemington on September 7.

Meanwhile, Stokes is the new trainer of Molto Bene. Molto Bene commenced her career with Will Clarken before joining Roslyn Day.

In her most recent campaign whilst in the care of Day, Molto Bene finished third in the Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) before being unplaced in the Australasian Oaks (2000m) and South Australian Derby (2500m).

“She’s obviously a mare with a bit of ability. She hasn’t won for quite a long time although she has been placed in some good races.”

“She had a pretty hard campaign last time running in the Oaks and Derby so I’m mindful of bringing her along slowly.

“She’ll have a trial in another month and then I’ll start her off in a race in Adelaide. She’s dropped in the ratings so it’ll be good to get a win with her to get her confidence back,” he added.
