John Sargent is on a classic roll and he isn’t finished yet with confirmation that his latest Group One winner will head to Sydney this week.
The successful trans-Tasman trainer prepared Kirramosa to win the Group 1 VRC Oaks in the spring and on Saturday his Matamata stable run by Hayden Allen produced Miss Mossman to run away with the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks.
“Hayden deserved it for all the hard work he and the staff have put in and it was great for him to get his first Group One,” Sargent said.
A daughter of Vinery Stud based sire Mossman, Miss Mossman will now be given her chance to complete a memorable double in the Group 1 $A1 million Australian Oaks at Randwick on April 19.
“We’ll fly her over this week and get her into the system,” Sargent said. “She’ll go to the Vinery and then on to the Oaks.
“We’re working on an Australian rider as Johnathon (Parkes) hasn’t ridden in Sydney before, but there’s no doubt he’ll be up to it in time – he’s a very good jockey.”
The stable’s form continued at the Randwick trials on Monday morning with a pair of three-year-old winners who hold nominations for the Group 1 $A2 million Australian Derby on April 12.
Mr One Eleven, a son of Shaft who has won three times, and the well-related Mountain View were successful in their respective 1200 metre heats.
“They’re both Derby-bound and Mr One Eleven goes to the Rosehill Guineas in two weeks’ time and Mountain View will run next at Randwick in a three-year-old staying race,” Sargent said.
“He’s got the pedigree, but I’m just not quite sure about the trip and sometimes he can race a bit fiercely.”
The winner of two races, the New Zealand-bred son of High Chaparral was a $200,000 Karaka purchase. He is a half-brother to the former champion sprinter Gee I Jane and to the dam of the Group One winners Katie Lee and the Sargent-trained Banchee.
