Saralago Gets Revenge On Pheidon

The winning run of the Hawkes training team has continued at Randwick with the promising Saralago turning the tables on her last-start conqueror Pheidon.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Pheidon and Darley’s Agadir both went into the Inglis Bonus (1600m) unbeaten but could not contain the finishing sprint of Saralago who began slowly.

Ridden by James McDonald, Saralago ($12) circled the field and grabbed Pheidon to win by a short neck with Agadir ($1.75 fav) third after being held in on the rail.

“She’s her own worst enemy in the gates but that was the best she’s jumped for me this prep,” McDonald said.

“She’s got so much ability and I am really looking forward to the autumn with her.”

The autumn may not figure in plans for Monton but two successive wins for the stable favourite put a smile on Ron Quinton’s face.

With Quinton’s apprentice Sam Clipperton aboard in the January Handicap (1600m) Monton wore away at the leader Honourable Aussie to win by 1-1/2 lengths.

“It’s lovely to see him win back to back races,” Quinton said.

“Sam showed plenty of initiative and Monton is a favourite in the stable.

“He has been running in Group races and running ok but appreciates being down in grade.

“I don’t know if there’s much left for him heading to the autumn and we’ll celebrate this win.”
