Summary Of Our Trainers’ Tips For Today’s Racing (Sat, 4th Jun)

From Richard & Will Freedman

Horse: Alakahan
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 5, Winter Cup) The gelding finished 4th in back-to-back Group races during the Sydney autumn carnival but hasn’t figured in three starts since returning from a short let-up. However, he did show improvement when midfield in the Premier’s Cup at Eagle Farm last weekend. There is still a bit of improvement to come fitness-wise and we have taken the blinkers off to try to get him to relax a bit more and give him a more dynamic finish. This race was always on the agenda, it wasn’t an afterthought. We knew that traditionally this race falls away because the better stayers are up in Queensland at this time of year and he is probably a level below them. It was the right race to target.

Horse: Notions
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 6, Farewell Nevesh Ramdhani Hcp) Notions has been off the scene since finishing 7th in the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) last spring and while she will improve once she is stepped up in trip, the filly has returned in good order. She has definitely got her share of ability, I wasn’t in the partnership when Richard and Michael were racing her last prep, but they threw her in the Gloaming because they had an opinion of her. She was OK in her first couple of trials, but we really liked the way she finished off in her most recent trial, she just kept finding the line.

Horse: Festival Dancer
Message: (Saturday, Brisbane Race 9, Queensland Oaks) An outside draw (18) has not helped the chances of Festival Dancer in the Queensland Oaks but hopefully a seven-day back-up will. The filly raced keenly when 7th to Barb Raider in The Roses (2100m) last weekend, however the stable is optimistic a quick turnaround back to the races could be key to taking the fresh edge off her. I’m hoping it will and that she might come out and settle a bit better because she needs to settle to finish it off. She didn’t relax very well the other day. She pulled hard in the run and because she didn’t relax, she didn’t sprint. Her runs have been OK and if she can get a little bit of a break in the main race on Saturday, she will be there when the whips are cracking.

Horse: Pappalino
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 5, Winter Cup) Pappalino is yet to miss a place in three starts at 2400m and expects Pappalino to be ready to peak after three runs back. He has needed a couple of runs to get fit, he is nice and fit now and he’s ready to go.

Horse: Lady Of Luxury
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 6, Farewell Nevesh Ramdhani Hcp) Lady Of Luxury is to step up in trip following her eye-catching first-up 3rd behind Mariamia over 1200m two weeks ago. There was a bit of a debate between 1200m and 1400m but she’s going well and it’s back a grade from what she’s been in. Dylan Gibbons takes 3kg off and she has a good gate (3) so that’s why we went that way. It was a very good run first-up, not many people missed it, and I think she is in great order.

Horse: Arapaho
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 7, Petaluma Hcp) I’m scratching my head a little bit (by his last start victory). I thought he would run a good race, no doubt about it, but I didn’t expect him to quite do that (won by 7.6 lengths). We’d love to see him run another good race then maybe we can look at some better races over the winter. He has shown us a lot of ability and we thought he was going to be a topliner when he came out here (from France). I think the Tamworth track was a bit hard (three starts back) but we backed him up eight days later and it was a good run (at Hawkesbury). No doubt he appreciated the cut in the track last time and we can’t fault him in how he’s come through the run. It’s not an easy race (on Saturday), there’s some promising horses, so he definitely has to step up.

Horse: Backrower
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 1, Bowermans Hcp) A debut victory against older horses has earned juvenile Backrower a chance in town. While he sustained a long run from back in the field to beat his more experienced rivals on a heavy surface at Newcastle, the horse didn’t relish the conditions. Rory Hutchings, who rode him, made the comment that he didn’t really handle the heavy ground that well, but he was able to win on a bit of class. He was scratched because of the heavy track last Saturday (at Randwick), so we are hoping it might be a little better this week at Rosehill. It was a win worth plenty of merit. The horse he beat (Huon) came out and won his next start (at Newcastle) last Saturday, so the form is quite strong. I think anytime those younger horses can beat those older horses, albeit at this time of the year, it’s a good sign. He is a progressive young horse.

Horse: Baroque Road
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 1, Bowermans Hcp) Keen to see how Baroque Road handles the rise to Saturday grade in the Bowerman’s Handicap after the two-year-old gave nothing else a chance when he led throughout for an impressive win on debut last month. He looks to have a lot of natural talent there and a lot of upside. He is stepping up in distance slightly, which I think he will handle well, and there was a lot to like about the way in which he won first time out on the Kensington track. If he was able to win and well, there are options for him in Queensland.

Horse: Military Mission
Message: (Saturday, Rosehill Race 5, Winter Cup) The English import has made good progression through the grades since landing in Australia, following back-to-back wins at Canterbury and Hawkesbury with a narrow 2nd at the Gosford stand-alone meeting. He lumped 61kg last start and drops seven kilos on Saturday and combined with a distance rise to 2400m, the race is an ideal goal. Military Mission is one of our better chances for the weekend. He has been targeted towards this race, he had a nice tick-over trial and he’s right up to the mark. He is stretching out to a trip I think he will relish, and we were looking to get him down in the weights a bit.
