Three Top Cup Hopes Need To Pass Ballot Clause

The Queen’s horse Carlton House is one of three fancied Melbourne Cup runners that have not yet passed the ballot clause.

Carlton House, the Lloyd Williams-owned Seville and David Hayes’ top contender Jet Away all must pass the ballot guarantee themselves a start in the Cup.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter explained that the three horses needed to either win a Listed and/or be placed or win a Group race over 2300 metres and beyond to pass the ballot clause.

Carpenter said the other alternative for the trio would be to run in the first eight in the Caulfield Cup.

He added the elimination order for the Melbourne Cup would be released within the next 48 hours.

Carlton House, yet to make his spring appearance, and Seville received 53.5 kg in the Cup while Jet Away, due to resume in the Turnbull Stakes, has 53 kg.
