War Breaks Maiden In Up And Coming

War has emerged as a potential Golden Rose contender after scoring an all the way victory in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Warwick Farm.

The Gai Waterhouse trained colt held off the fast finishing Drago, who is also headed towards the Golden Rose, to record his maiden career win.

While not confirmed her immediate plans for War, Waterhouse suggested he was a ‘sprinter/miler’ with a bright future.

“He’s a very good horse in the making,” Waterhouse said.

“Everyone wanted to knock his run at Canterbury but I thought it was outstanding. He has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since.

Asked how she has turned around War since his defeat in a maiden at Canterbury last start, Waterhouse replied;

“I worked him with a couple of other horses, sitting behind them, you know like smoking a cigar or rolling a joint,” she said.

War, who started favourite on debut in the Breeders Plate as a two-year-old almost a year ago, was a big drifter in the betting ring, easing to $15.
