Sydney Cup Weights (Comments & Full List Of Weights)

A total of 70 nominations have been weighted for the 147th running of the $500,000 Schweppes Sydney Cup (Group 1) to be staged at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 27 April 2013.

Included in the nominations are seven starters from the 2012 Melbourne Cup – Green Moon (Ire), Kelinni (Ire), Mourayan (Ire), Sanagas (Ger), Maluckyday (NZ), Tac de Boistron (Fr) and Niwot.

Green Moon, winner of the 2012 Group 1-Melbourne Cup (3200m) and the Group 1-Turnbull Stakes (2000m), has been allotted the equal topweight in the race with 59.0kg on a 52.0kg limit.

Sea Moon (GB) shares top billing with 59.0kg and brings very strong form lines from overseas.  This includes a decisive 3.25 length victory over Dunaden and Red Cadeaux carrying level weights in the Group 2-Hardwick Stakes (2414m) at Royal Ascot, as well as a second to St Nicholas Abbey in the Group 1-Breeders Cup (2412m) at Churchill Downs (USA).

Next in the order of weights is the 2011 Group 1-Victoria Derby (2500m) winner Sangster (NZ), who has been handicapped at 57.0kg.  His most recent form includes a win in the 2013 Group 1-Auckland Cup (3200m) by over 2 lengths as well as the Group 1-International Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa (New Zealand).

Last year’s Sydney Cup winner Niwot has been allotted 55.5kg; this is an increase of 1.5kg on the weight allocated last year before weights had to be raised at final acceptances.

The highest weighted 3YO in the race is It’s a Dundeel (NZ) with 54.0kg.  He is the 2012 Group 1-Spring Champion (2000m) winner, as well as most recently winning the 2013 Group 1-Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m).
