Black Caviar Memorabilia Up For Auction

The massive 32m x 23m salmon and black coloured Black Caviar flag that was seen high above Sydney prior to the mare’s final race start will be auctioned.

The flag was carried by a helicopter across Sydney on April 13, the date of the mighty mare’s last race start in her historic Darley TJ Smith Stakes victory.  Emblazoned across the flag were the words ‘SYDNEY ♥  BLACK CAVIAR’.

Commissioned by the Australian Turf Club and Racing NSW with the support of Destination NSW through the BMW Sydney Carnival partnership, the flag flew around Sydney’s beaches and landmarks for four hours leading into what was to be Black Caviar’s final race.

All proceeds from the sale of the flag will go to the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust (TRT).  The Trust raises funds to help retired racehorses gain a second chance in life through a re-training program.

Once ready, TRT finds them new homes as pleasure horses, police horses, eventers and show horses. This unique flag will be signed by trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen – with the auction now live on ebay.  The auction will span seven days with no reserve set.

Peter Moody said:  “I’m happy to support the auction given the funds are going to such a worthy cause. Someone will have a very large memento of her famous last win.

“I’ll need a mighty big marker pen to sign my name on such a big flag, but I’ll give it my best shot!”

Racing NSW’s Ian Mackay said:  “This is an exclusive piece of history and many would have seen the banner being towed by the chopper or on television where it was featured by Channel 7 during their Derby Day coverage.  It’s a huge flag and there are probably 1001 uses for something this big and we hope it finds a good home.”
