McEvoy Snares Lightweight Cup Ride

Three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy has secured a lightweight ride in this year’s race.

Australian Bloodstock has booked McEvoy to ride returning galloper Ashrun in Tuesday’s Group 1, with the stayer securing his path into the Melbourne Cup by running second in last week’s Geelong Cup.

It comes as Ciaron Maher and David Eustace also confirmed John Allen as the rider for Right You Are. Star UK jockey Hollie Doyle was previously booked to ride Future History for the stable.

Ashrun is one of the feelgood stories of Cup Week, having missed 1000 days of racing due to injuries.

He has returned in solid form this preparation, running seventh over 1700m before an eye-catching sixth in the Bart Cummings.

Mark Zahra rode Ashrun in the Geelong Cup but is committed to riding Caulfield Cup winner Without A Fight in the Melbourne Cup.

McEvoy has previously saluted in the Cup on Brew (2000), Almandin (2016) and Cross Counter (2018).

He was also narrowly defeated in the 2020 Melbourne Cup when he finished second on board favourite Tiger Moth for Aidan O’Brien.

Ashrun is a $34 hope in the Melbourne Cup, while Right You Are is a $61 chance.
