Freedman Has ASM On His Mind

Toorak Handicap winner Attrition has returned to work at Mitch Freedman’s Ballarat stables with the four-year-old stallion likely to be set for the $4 million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on March 16.

Freedman said although he hadn’t made a firm plan with Attrition for his 2024 campaign the All-Star Mile it was definitely in his thoughts.

If he were to set Attrition for the race, Freedman said he would have to work out a way to get into the lucrative event.

In 2024 there are eight ”Win and You’re In Races”, of which the Toorak Handicap isn’t one of them.

There are three races before the All-Star Mile held in Melbourne which carry a ballot exempt pass for the race which are the G1 Orr Stakes on 10 February 2024 and the  G1 Futurity Stakes on February 24, both run at Caulfield over 1400 metres.

The final “Win and You’re In” race is the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 2.

“With the All-Star Mile it’s a matter of going about getting him into it,” Freedman said.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure what I’ll do. I’ll get him back and moving and map out a bit of a plan in the next couple of weeks.

Attrition gave Freedman his first Group 1 winner with his narrow win over Antino in the Toorak Handicap. Freedman then set him for The Golden Eagle but he had to scratch him from that due to a lameness issue.
