The retirement to stud of Group 1 winner Ozzmosis has Bjorn Baker on the lookout for his next young gun sprinter and he might not have far to search.
Caballus, who joined his team earlier this year from the Chris Waller yard, is back in work and Baker is pencilling in some ambitious plans for the spring.
Bought by Darby Racing as a tried horse, the rising four-year-old made an immediate impression, backing up a strong win at Rosehill with victory in the Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick.
Instead of pushing into the autumn, Baker opted to pull up stumps after Caballus finished third in the Inglis Sprint at Flemington in March with a long-term view towards next season.
“He only had the three runs and he did a super job winning a Group Three,” Baker said.
“He ran very well in the Inglis race so after three runs, we just opted to give him a good break. I couldn’t be happier with him now, so I do think we made the right decision.
“This preparation has been very straightforward. He has done everything really, really well and he’s coming along nicely.”
Caballus is on schedule to barrier trial in the coming weeks and beyond that, Baker is keeping his options open.
Races in Sydney and Melbourne will be considered, including the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.
“We will look at some of the good sprint races for him, we may even consider taking him down to Melbourne for a race like the Moir Stakes,” Baker said.
“But I think the best is definitely still to come with him.”
