Group 1 winning galloper Alcopop has officially been retired.
The Jake Stephens-trained eight-year-old ran a tremendous second to Dunaden in the Caulfield Cup last Spring, followed by victory in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes. The gelding rounded out an illustrious career with a third in the Group I Hong Kong International Cup (2000m) in December.
“Looking at his spring preparation he took a long while to come up and the older they get the harder you have to work them to get them fit so I just didn’t want to put him through it all again.
“He’s nice and sound at the moment considering the problems he’s had, so it’s just a nice way to retire him on the back of what he’s done over the spring and in Hong Kong,” Stephens said.
Alcopop won 10 races from 34 starts with prizemoney totalling just under $2 million.
