It could be a bittersweet result for trainer Andrew Noblet if Victorian mare Foxy Frida writes her name into the record books with back-to-back wins in the Magic Millions National Classic at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
No mare has won the $500,000 fillies and mares feature in successive years but Noblet is hopeful Foxy Frida can be the first.
The Magic Millions National Classic could be the final race for Foxy Frida before she heads to the breeding barn.
The daughter of Foxwedge was sold to Bangaloe Stud in Scone for $575,000 at the National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast.
Foxy Frida – a Blake Shinn mount – is stabled at Barry Lockwood’s Eagle Farm stables and produced a top trial with a fast-finishing fifth to the Danny O’Brien-trained Maracana at Doomben on May 25.
Shinn is having a brilliant winter carnival, having won the Group 1 Queensland Derby on Warmonger and Group 1 Doomben Cup on Bois D’argent.
“Her last run was very good off a wide gate and she had to go back,” Noblet said.
“Not many horses on the day made up ground like she did.”
Noblet is unsure of the stud’s future plans for Foxy Frida, including whether she’ll have her final race in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara at Eagle Farm, or be retired after Saturday.
“This could be her last run before she goes to the breeding barn,” Noblet said.
“I’m really not sure what her new owners have planned for her and whether she’ll retire after this race or have one more run in the Tatt’s Tiara.
“But, everything has a full stop.”
Noblet admitted it would be a sentimental time when Foxy Frida does end her career.
“I bought her as a yearling in Melbourne for $45,000 and she’s gone on to win $1.3 million in prize money,” he said.
“She’s had a good and healthy career but she’s rising seven now.
“Her previous owners had the option of retiring her after last year’s Tatt’s Tiara but they decided to race on for another year with her.
“She won a Group 3 in Adelaide and a couple of good money races as well and she’s been placed at Group 2 level.”
