Cantonese Takes Aim At The Perth Cup

The Christmas Cup winner Cantonese will be aimed at the Group 2 Perth Cup 2400m on New Year’s Day 1st January 2013.

Instead of heading to the spelling paddock after the Christmas Cup, trainer Bjorn Baker has changed his mind after the gelding has pulled up in magnificent order following his career best effort.

“I’m wary he’s been up for a while but nothing is telling me that he needs a break,” Baker said.

Traditionally the Summer Cup on Boxing Day is the following race targeted by many Christmas Cup contenders but Baker is awared that the Perth Cup is worth $400,000, which is 3 times the prize money for the Summer Cup.

Top jockey Jim Cassidy who rode Cantonese to a six length romp in the Christmas Cup will have first refusal on the mount in the Perth Cup.
