Pierro Trials On Tuesday

Former jockey Mark Newnham will come out of retirement to ride Pierro when the star colt trials at Rosehill on Tuesday.

Newnham, raceday foreman and a track rider for Gai Waterhouse, is Pierro’s regular work partner.

With stable jockey Nash Rawiller sidelined by a broken ankle, Newnham has received the call-up.

“I ride him in most of his work and have done pretty much all his life.

“He looks and feels great. He has strengthened up and matured.”

Pierro has not raced since finishing a courageous third to Ocean Park and All Too Hard in the Cox Plate.

Waterhouse continues to map out an autumn campaign for Pierro that could include the Doncaster Mile with the Group I Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9 a possible first-up target.
