Supplementary Stewards Comment – Newcastle (Saturday, July 13)

Please note the following supplementary stewards comment for the Newcastle race meeting on Saturday (13th July).

RACE 3:-
Horse No. 8 – HEAVENSENTME (from Newcastle; Saturday, 22 June 2013): When questioned regarding settling in last position, apprentice rider said from wide barrier she had been instructed to ride the filly quietly. Apprentice rider stated that in hindsight, she had erred in restraining her mount too far after the start in an attempt to comply with her instructions which resulted in her mount losing touch with the field in the middle stages. Apprentice rider added that whilst she was aware she was still a number of lengths off the second last horse making the home turn, she elected to keep her mount balanced at this stage of the event rather than place it under full pressure. She added that once brought to the outside shortly after straightening, the filly responded well and ran to the line strongly over the final 200m. Stewards advised apprentice rider that in their opinion, she had erred in restraining her mount excessively in the early stages resulting in her mount losing touch with the field and that she had erred in not attempting to improve her position leaving the 600m when the field commenced quicken. The apprentice jockey was told that her ride would be referred to the Riding Skills Panel. Trainer to be further interviewed relative to instructions.
