Winter Stakes Attracts An Excellent Line-Up

Last start Stakes winner Mic Mac heads a strong group of nominations for this Saturday’s $100,000 Listed-Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Prepared by Paul Messara, Mic Mac returned to winning form following a four-year hiatus when he claimed the Listed-Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill on July 6.

A quality list of 17 nominations has been received by Australian Turf Club for the Winter Stakes including fellow Group winners Kinnersley (Lord Mayor’s Cup winner), See the World (Maurice McCarten Stakes), Kontiki Park (Bernborough Handicap), Bold Glance (Ascot Handicap), Star of Octagonal (Rowley Mile) and Darci Be Good (Hawkesbury Cup).

An interesting nomination is the Chris Waller-trained import Bayrir – a four-year-old stallion that has not raced since finishing sixth behind Red Cadeaux in the Group 1-Hong Kong Vase (2400m) last December.

The French-bred galloper is a Stakes winner in both France and the US and has won four of his only eight starts so he should attract plenty of interest.

Dual Group One winner Atomic Force heads nominations for the $85,000 Benchmark 95 Handicap (1100m). Atomic Force, prepared by Darren Smith, has not raced since finishing ninth to Black Caviar in the Gr 1-TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick in April.

However, the seven-year-old bolted in with an 800m barrier trial at Gosford 10 days ago. Other nominations for the race include News Alert, Kenny’s World, Zaratone, Choice Words, Whitlam, Metallurgical, Hurrara and last start Rosehill winner Master Harry.

The highly-rated Bull Point, trained by Gai Waterhouse, heads the nominations for the $85,000 Two-Year-Old Handicap (1200m).
