Rain Looks The Winning Edge For Jungle

Cranbourne trainer Mick Bell is the first to admit that he spends more time than he probably should looking at weather sites and even doing the odd rain dance.

But even he couldn’t have predicted such perfect conditions for his mudlark Jungle Edge in Saturday’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes.

It’s no secret the rising nine-year-old loves the wet, but he especially thrives on a Heavy track.

The sprinter has run in Heavy conditions for Bell 15 times for six wins and seven placings.

With Caulfield Track Manager Jason Kerr predicting Saturday’s meeting looks likely to start in the Heavy range due to more forecast rain, Bell is surprised Jungle Edge remains on the fourth line of betting at as much as $7 in most markets.

“Conditions will suit him perfectly, I couldn’t be happier with the wet conditions and even the wide barrier is exactly what he likes,” Bell said.

“He’s never won at Caulfield but he’s also never run on a Heavy track there, so I’m excited that he’ll get his chance to show what he can do.

“I wouldn’t swap his chances for anyone else in the race, he’s bright and ready to race.

“I’ve liked what he’s showed in his past two gallops so really can’t wait for Saturday.”
