Rawiller Snares Macau Group 1

Top jockey Nash Rawiller has completed a big weekend on the track by taking out the G1 Chairman’s Challenge Cup aboard Famous Jonathn in Macau on Sunday night.

Rawiller returned to the races last Wednesday following a six-week break and quickly made his presence felt by riding a double at Randwick on Saturday.

He then travelled to Macau for three rides on the five-race card at Taipa on Sunday and teamed up with Australian expat training partners Nicholas and Gary Moore to win the 1200m feature.

The Deep Field gelding began well from the inside draw and quickly got to the lead. From there, he never looked in doubt, running out a comprehensive two and a half-length winner.

Sunday’s triumph took Famous Jonathn’s record to six wins and five placings from seventeen career starts.

Rawiller is no stranger to Macau racing, having won the 2015 Macau Derby in 2015 aboard The Alfonso. He also rode across the Pearl River Delta in Hong Kong for four years from 2014 to 2018, racking up 134 winners and earning the nickname of ‘chow fan’ (fried rice) from local punters for his distinctive riding style in a finish.

Rawiller’s success over the weekend did come at a cost, however, as he received a suspension for his winning ride on King Of Naples on Saturday, ruling him out from riding again until the G1 Winx Stakes meeting at Randwick on August 19.
